AMERICA NEWTON The America Newton Historical Gift Shop is located at 2024 Third Street in the historic town of Julian. Named in honor of Americas Newton a former slave who resided in Julian for over 50 years, she was the area's premier laundry lady. As a successful African American businesswoman, she earned the respect of townspeople through hard work and good character. The road leading to the former site of her cabin was referred to as America Grade. You can learn more about Americas Newton by visiting the historical exhibit inside the gift shop or by obtaining the book, Black Gold (African American History of Julian) also available at the gift shop. The America Newton Historical Gift Shop features an array of specialty gift items such as soaps, potpourris, games, post cards, books, magazines, T-shirts, mugs, jewelry, select art pieces, paintings and more; all with a Julian/African American flair. Oh, we have coffee and peach cobbler too. HOURS: 10am-4pm (From January-May 2006 the store is open on Saturdays and Sundays only. The store is expected to expand to 7 days a week by the summer. Call for information on additional days and hours as they may be added earlier. DIRECTIONS: From interstate 8, take Hwy 79. From interstate 15, take Hwy 78.
